New theme

Posted on August 1, 2010

I’m working on a new theme. It’s sort of work-related, but mostly because I was getting tied of the old theme and couldn’t find one I really liked. Like cigarettes, rolling your own theme seems simple until you try it.

Calling it a beta version is giving it too much credit, but it’s a good experience.

WordPress 2.8 upgrade

Posted on June 11, 2009

WordPress 2.8 came out yesterday afternoon and I just finished the upgrade. For the past few versions, WordPress has become one of the most user-friendly pieces of software I’ve seen. It seems well thought out and well-constructed.

WordPress has a tool called Upgrade in the Admin panel, which allows people to easily upgrade or reinstall the WordPress code. No FTP needed, since it’s as simple as clicking a button. However, it’s not problem-free.

I have this blog for myself and a test blog I use for work. I logged into this blog and there was nothing new – there was no notice about the new version. Logging into the test blog, there were two banners mentioning the upgrade. Upgrading the test blog was virtually effortless, but I was puzzled by the lack of a notice on gottahavacuppamocha. The Upgrade tool said the blog was using 2.7.1 and that it was the latest version. On a hunch, I clicked on the Re-install button. WordPress 2.7.1 was reinstalled, but when it finished, there was a notice about the 2.8 version. I clicked on the button and let it upgrade. The upgrade went easy, but I had to trick WordPress to do so.

Still, WordPress is far more user-friendly than MediaWiki. MediaWiki is easier to setup, but WordPress is easier to maintain. WP isn’t perfect, but it’s damn close.

It’s a small world after all

Posted on June 2, 2008

Two things: first, I’m reworking the site a bit and trying to develop a look that will work with both MediaWiki and WordPress. I have the WP version started, but not yet finished, which can be seen over here. Given the architectures of MW and WP, the overall look will have to be coded separately for each piece of software. It still has a way to go yet, and there is a glitch in viewing it in Firefox 3 RC1, though it seems to look okay in Firefox 2, Opera, and Safari.

[edit: it's finished now and looks fine in Firefox 3 RC1]

Second, coming in this morning I saw bicycle commuter coming in a door I was passing by. However, what caught my eye was the bike jersey he was wearing. I saw the logo of Bristol Brewing’s Laughing Lab Scottish Ale and did a double take. I’ve never seen Bristol beers here in Indy, so it was strange to see the jersey. I stopped and talked with the guy for a few minutes, and it turns out his brother works for Bristol Brewing as a QA person (what a job that must be :-D)

PHP 5 and WP 2.2.2

Posted on September 2, 2007

As I’m prone to do, I decided to give myself a project this weekend. It involves the Lingo/Giraf thing I was working on months ago. My coding skills aren’t quite that good, so I figured I would see if MediaWiki 1.10.1 could be adapted for use in that project. It looks like it works okay on my PC, but with the site on the PC, I can’t check it with the Palm T|X.

Long story short, I upgraded the whole website to PHP 5. As suspected, it broke some things, namely WordPress. I upgraded WordPress to 2.2.2 to see if that helped, and it didn’t really. What I had to do was remove the SpamKarma2 plugin along with the wp-contact-form. The contact form isn’t a big loss. SpamKarma2 was a mixed bag. Ever since installing it, I would get all kinds of fatal errors relating to memory (e.g. tried to allocate …). Plus, I found myself logging in less often because I knew SK2 would take care of the spam. I got lazy.

Anyway, WordPress seems to be back to normal more-or-less, minus a couple of plugins. I’ll probably have to sort out problems as they occur.

Datsa’ Pizza

Posted on March 1, 2006

Walking home from work today, on my way to get my Powerball ticket, I stopped at a tiny restaurant called Datsa’ Pizza. The place opened earlier this year (well, last year) on N Pennsylvania just north of the Central Library construction site and right next to Urban Element. I’ve walked by it a bunch of times without ever going in. It never really dawned on me that a place so small might be worthy of my attention. They don’t deliver. They have dine-in and carry out only. That said, a week or so ago, I was walking past and noticed they had a digital photo of a calzone taped to the window. I briefly channeled Homer Simpson (Mmmm, calzones), then walked past. Today when I was walking by, I saw the photo again and did quick double take and walked in.

Smoothing wrinkles

Posted on March 1, 2006

As I started composing this post in my mind, I was thinking about the phrase “ironing out some bugs.” Strange one, that. When I iron, I iron out wrinkles. If a bug of some sort crawls on the clothes I’m ironing, I flick the bug away with a finger. I don’t crush it with the iron, because it would stain the clothes. Whatever…

In 2005, I started out strong in posting to the blog. I’m pretty sure I had at least one post every month. I’ve been known to slack every so often, but I’m kind of getting back into it. I’m not taking any classes this semester, so that should leave me with more time for blogging. OTOH, I also have no life, so while I should have more time for blogging, I have found a text based Scrabble game on my computer system that’s as addictive and frustrating as Solitaire. Even though I tell myself I should be working on my blog, I often end up surfing the web or playing Scrabble. At least the Scrabble is intellectually challenging.

Bells & Whistles

Posted on February 26, 2006

Well, if you have been around the site awhile, you may have noticed a change or two lately. I finally decided to upgrade to WordPress 2.0, and I couldn’t be more pleased with it. WP has matured a lot over the years, and my guess is it’s at least equal to, and possibly superior to MovableType or other blogging software, IMHO.

Anyway, the new version has lots of bells and whistles for me to try out and tinker with. Some of them were available on the old 1.2 version I was using, but most of them have come into being since WP 1.5. Version 1.5 added loads of new functionality and became the default version used by most plugin and theme developers. I spent most of today adding plugins, many of which you will never see because they deal with admin stuff. Others are thing you will see, but they are more subtle. The site now has nested comments, where you can reply to someone else’s comments. Not really a problem on a low traffic site like this, but it may come in handy in the future. At the very least, it will allow me to reply to comments more directly.

Fark Party

Posted on August 27, 2005

Rule #1: Don’t post when drunk (this would’ve been funnier if I left the typos in).

Just came back from the Indianapolis Fark party. I am fairly well drunk. Three Woodchuck ciders, one Hornsby’s cider, Sam Adams, Pete’s Wicked Ale, Anchor Steam, a Butterball (buttery nipple/slipery nipple), and a Kamikaze.

The funniest line I heard all night (that I can remember): “I’m squishing your tampons.” Alright, I’m drunk. G’night.
