Review – Learn Norwegian Vocabulary – Gengo WordPower
Posted on July 24, 2011
This app is mostly vocabulary with just a few simple phrases. It’s not bad, but if you want to learn Norwegian, your money would be better spent elsewhere. Some of the vocabulary items are just odd. For example, under “Animals” is has goat and mouse. That’s it. No dog or cat. I don’t know if this is reflective of Norwegian culture or the app maker cutting corners. For a maritime nation such as Norway, I would have thought words for fish or whale might be included.
Most of the words I’ve come across have audio so you can hear a native speaker pronounce them, but a few words have no audio at all. Some words have also been put into phrases, but there aren’t many of these. I would have given it more stars if they expanded on the number of phrases along with audio of native speakers. The only downside for the audio phrases is some of them are spoken at native speed. While it might be okay for more advanced language learners, it’s difficult for those just getting started with Norwegian.
This app is sort of a beginner’s dictionary with included audio and pictures. It’s not a language course, and there is no obvious place to start if you are trying to learn. The app would be good as supplementary material for a Beginning Norwegian class, but it’s not very practical on it’s own.
Learn Norwegian Vocabulary – Gengo WordPower can be found in the Mac App Store
