Blogging in bed

Posted on January 3, 2009

It started on the evening of the 1st, when I felt a bit flushed. Taking my temperature revealed a slight fever. I went to bed as normal and slept well, all things considered. Yesterday, the fever went down a bit to 100, but slowly picked back up to 101. Late yesterday evening, I started shivering, despite having a fever of a 103, and despite the room being a cozy 75. At 11:30 pm, I went to bed early (for me) and covered myself with a fleece blanket and a comforter. The good news is the shivering stopped pretty quickly, but the downside is my body felt it was burning up from the fever. I slept well until 2:00 am, when I got up to use the lav. Since I’m not very tired, it seemed a good time to blog.

I had this happen last year, but don’t remember when. I recall having a temp of 105 at one point and thinking I should go to the hospital. High fevers bring on questionable judgments, since the brain is affected by the fever. I didn’t go to the hospital, but I did take naproxen (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) and aspirin to help lower the fever. Generic NyQuil liquicaps may have been part of that, but I’m less than certain whether I used them then. They are usually part of my over-the-counter treatment for trying to get to sleep despite nasal/sinus/chest congestion.

Another way to lower the body temperature is a bath. It can’t be too hot or the fever might go higher, and it can’t be too cold, otherwise the body could go into shock. That might not be so bad at a hospital, but at home it would be deadly. After taking a few lukewarm baths, I discovered the result of lowering the body temperature was short lived.

Since waking up, I feel slightly better. The fever was 103 thirty minutes ago. The muscles of my body feel as if they’ve aged 20 – 40 years. However, I’m not shivering and the fever feels a bit better. If only the headache would go away. I’m also not very tired, hence the blogging. Wireless is a good thing :-)

I took some aspirin about 15 minutes ago and am still waiting for it to work. Naproxen is only supposed to taken once every 8 – 12 hours. I took the first one at 8:30 yesterday morning, the took another around 6:00 pm. I could take one now, but will wait until morning instead.
