Snow and more snow

Posted on February 13, 2007

Last night before I went to bed I read that we were supposed to get 1 – 3 inches of snow by morning and probably six inches by the end of the day. I woke up, looked out the window and sure enough there was snow on the ground. To make it worse, the trees were moving so I knew it was windy. I got bundled up (layering is the key to staying warm) and made my way to work as usual, by walking. It wasn’t until I got to work that I thought about checking to see about closings and cancellations. I stepped into the office and checked the IUPUI webpage. Sure enough all classes were cancelled, though I work for the School of Medicine which is a special case. Since I just walked into work, I wasn’t about to turn around and go back home. I decided to get some work done. It was nice because I was able to get some work done that I had put off for a rainy day. I was able to do some filing and work on the Windows 2003 server the department has. Both have needed to be done for quite awhile and today I was able to get them done with a minimum of distraction. I hope tomorrow is more of the same so I can finish both of them.

Only a few other people from our department made it in, mainly because they’re researchers and have to get some grants in by the end of the week.

Personally I wasn’t impressed by the amount of snow. Living in Colorado for 20+ years does that I guess. The sleet and the wind coming home from work was kind of annoying because the wind kept blowing the sleet in my face. It wasn’t too cold, but getting little crystals of ice in my face made me feel like I was getting sandblasted, and it stung a bit when it got in my eyes. I kept my head down as much as possible.

The forecast is for it to keep snowing until sometime tomorrow, but for the heaviest of the snow to be done by midnight tonight. I think tomorrow morning I’ll check the weather (and closings) before I leave for work.

*** UPDATE ***
The power went off here for a few minutes in my apartment building. Despite the snow not normally bothering me, facing the prospect of no power for the night isn’t fun. I could bundle in my apartment, but no power = no heat, which would be a very bad thing.
