Life’s little instruction manual

Posted on December 4, 2006

Every so often you come across a piece of information that seems useless to you. It has no bearing on your life. It’s trivial, but you file it in the back of your brain because you never know when you might need it.

I came across something like that today. Reading the the blog of a girl teaching English in Japan, I saw a link on the sidebar that caught my eye. The Squat Toilet Manual is just one of those random pieces of information. For most people who might read this blog, it will be something they’ll never use. Then again, if you ever find yourself face-to-face with one of these plumbing fixtures, you’ll know what to do. Click the link and expand your mind.

Dude, this is hilarious! I’m sure some day I’ll be glad I read this.

What I think is strange is if they have plumbing and running water, why have the squat toilet at all. Maybe it’s a cultural thing. OTOH, they also created the “normal” toilets with heated seats, push button controls, integrated bidets, and so on. It must be like going from one extreme to another.

I like how under the lid of my western style toilet in my Japanese house, there are instructions explaining how to use it. Sounds like another photo blog entry in the works!

Be sure to provide a translation ;-)

I wouldn’t think it’s that complicated, but who knows. I guess it could be culture shock on their part if all they used were squat toilets and were suddenly faced with a western toilet.
