Slackware 10.0

Posted on July 31, 2004

I started an upgrade to Slackware 10.0, which has been out for a little while. Previously, if I wanted to upgrade to a new version, I would have downloaded the ISO files, burned them to CD-RWs, and then installed them. However, earlier today, I downloaded a shell script called slackupdate. Mainly it is for updating files within the current distro version, but it also has an option to download an upgrade to the next version, which is what is going on now.

The downloading is done and it is changing out different files and packages to newer versions. It is pretty interesting since the computer is on and I am using it. I don’t think I’ll even have to reboot :-) Try that with Windows. My first clue was went to my K menu (using KDE) and the icons had a new look and the sidebar said KDE 3.2 instead of 3.1. Sadly, it looks like it also got rid of games, but I’m hoping it will replace them shortly.
