Slackware 10.0

Posted on July 31, 2004

I started an upgrade to Slackware 10.0, which has been out for a little while. Previously, if I wanted to upgrade to a new version, I would have downloaded the ISO files, burned them to CD-RWs, and then installed them. However, earlier today, I downloaded a shell script called slackupdate. Mainly it is for updating files within the current distro version, but it also has an option to download an upgrade to the next version, which is what is going on now.

The downloading is done and it is changing out different files and packages to newer versions. It is pretty interesting since the computer is on and I am using it. I don’t think I’ll even have to reboot :-) Try that with Windows. My first clue was went to my K menu (using KDE) and the icons had a new look and the sidebar said KDE 3.2 instead of 3.1. Sadly, it looks like it also got rid of games, but I’m hoping it will replace them shortly.

New categories

Posted on July 25, 2004

I created s couple of new categories. The first was Weather since I seem to be posting about that a lot lately. The second is Food. This is partly for recipes and partly for reviews of food products, resturants, grocery stores, websites, etc. nothing major about either of them. Just a way to “categorize” stuff on the blog.

Beautiful World

Posted on July 24, 2004

Today was (is) a beeeyoooteeeful day. It’s sunny and the temps are in the lower to mid 70s with a slight breeze out. Compared to the last few days of 80 and 90 degree temps with oppressive humidity, this was perfection.

I did my usual weekend thing of going to the gas station and getting a Powerball ticket and then walking downtown to get a grande mocha. Since the temperatures were moderate I opted for a hot mocha, as opposed to an iced mocha. Usually, I would go to Borders or some other store, but I didn’t feel like spending any money, and since I didn’t want to go home either, I decided to walk around a bit. I’ve walked in quite a few areas of downtown, but not all of them. In particular, I haven’t walked that much in the southern part of downtown. Today, I walked down to the Lilly campus and headed east until I reached the highway, and then I started back north towards my apartment. mostly I stuck to the side streets because some of the houses and buildings are pretty cool. Basically when I do this it is like my own personal architectural walking tour, although I don’t stop to look at the buildings in great detail. Sometimes I do stop and loo in the windows if there is a “for sale” sign, but that’s about it. I should have brought my pedometer so I could figure out how far I walked. It seemd like five miles, but I’m guessing it was only three or so.

On my tour, I stopped in at a True Value hardware store that opened up recently. This was the first time I walked in since they opened and I wanted to get an idea of what they had. It looked very nice, but it was pretty small. They had staple guns, which I will probably be getting soon so I can re-upholster my computer chair. Other than that, there wasn’t much else that interested me. Strangely, they also had some lumber, although only a small selection of that. On the other hand, it’s not like it was a Home Depot or anything. Still, I’m glad they opened up, because something like this has been needed downtown for a while.

Storm’s a brewin’

Posted on July 21, 2004

I realize that the only times I have written lately have been related to the weather, but what can I say? That’s the way it is.

Anyway, we have another storm coming through this evening, and according to weather.com, it looks to be short, but very intense. The radar picture shows a lot of red areas surrounded by only a few green areas.

One of the buildings next to mine just got some sort of membrane roofing put on it today, but it doesn’t look like they quite finished before quitting for the day. Considering the wind we are getting now, I am wondering if that membrane will still be on in the morning. I think they glued it to the roof, but left the edges unfinished. It might be just enough for the rain and wind to tear it asunder(?).
