Wired for sound…
Posted on March 16, 2002
After much procrastination and a little bit of trial and error, I figured out how to record from a headset/microphone with my computer. I know it may not seem like much, but this means I am one step closer to being my own net-DJ. On the other hand, the current legal climate makes it very unlikely that I will be able to play or stream music from my website. Of course, if there are any musicians out there who want their stuff played on the net, I will be glad to help out any way I can. Otherwise, it will be just me rambling on-and-on, or whatever music/noise I can coax out of my linux machine. :-)
As an alternative type of radio show, maybe I can do a comedy show like Monty Python. How about some kind of whacked out talk-show host – conspiracy theories, Nazi-midget-transsxeual strippers with speech-impediments and their alien love children, etc.
I think the basic idea will go like this: I record my show as a .wav then use oggenc to re-record it as an .ogg file. That will make the file much smaller, thus being easier on bandwidth, while retaining a good quality…well, as good a quality as I can get out of my el cheapo equipment. After that, I will either put it on my website as a file for download or as a stream of some kind – probably using Icecast. I’ll have to figure out which is less bandwidth and CPU intensive.
Well, I’m off to play with the new stuff. Check out the downloads section and the gottahavacuppamocha forum for more info.
